Aquaculture has been ongoing in Palau for many hears, however, it ‘s various associated sector are fragmented and not currently integrated for aquaculture farmers that depend on this industry for their livelihoods. From gaps in regulations to limited market access, there is a lack of a centralized system to administer all aspects of aquaculture governance to integrate economic and conservation biodiversity benefits.
Project Component 1– The project aims to produce key outputs to enable a supporting policy environment for the development of sustainable aquaculture in Palau:
- National Aquaculture Policy
- There is a draft aquaculture policy produced by ADB (2009) that was not ratified by lawmakers.
- Aquatic Animal Health Management Strategy
- Address proper waste management for all finfish and invertebrates to prevent disease and ensure low mortality rates.
- National Ecological Approach to Aquaculture Management (EAAM) Farming Standard
- Giant Clam Conservation Act
- Will provide additional protections to wild Tridacna gigas, listed as critically endangered according to the latest assessment (IUCN, 2024).
- National Sustainable Aquaculture Development Plan (5-year plan)
