The Division of Aquaculture is pleased to host visiting members of the Kiribati Coastal Fisheries that attended a week-long knowledge exchange on best aquaculture practices for marine species. The highlight of the visit is the packaging of the sandfish that have been quarantined at PMDC in anticipation of export to Kiribati facilitated by local partner Watson and Sons Aquaculture Palau.

Fisheries Specialists Percy and Sorens and Fisheries Technicians Hanford and Masao assisted with preparations for the cargo such as quarantine protocols, including monitoring the oxygen tanks. In addition, Coastal Fisheries Officers Daley and Jireh are on hand to conduct inspections and process the necessary permits that will be required throughout the shipment journey

Our partners from Division of Customs and the Division of Biosecurity are also present to ensure a smooth turnover of the cargo with all the required export and biosecurity permits.

The Bureau of Fisheries is honored to assist Kiribati with promoting biodiversity and economic livelihoods with this donation of sandfish brood stock. These partnerships strengthen not only conservation and biodiversity across the Pacific, but also cultural and regional economic ties.
